Sanam is the name of a modern village six kilometres downstream from Jebel Barkal, on the southern bank of the Nile. Parts of an urban agglomeration of the Napatan period have been revealed here. Possibly they are the remains of ancient Napata, the first Kushite capital. The town's major temple, dedicated to the god Amun, was reportedly built by Taharqo. Like its counterparts at Jebel Barkal and Kawa, it played an important role in the coronation ceremonies of the Kushite kings. It can be visited amidst modern houses today.
Since 2003, Kurru has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage serial property "Jebel Barkal and the sites of the Napatan region".
